Do You Want To Know a Secret?
It was Paul, George, and Ringo, but then Ringo went home, so it was just Paul and George onstage in the back of this dark bar and no one was really paying attention but us. I asked them to sing a song I can't now remember. They were done, but did it as an a capella encore. It was OK: George didn't really know John's harmony, but he muddled through. Afterward, they hugged us and we walked out into the sunrise to buy things we failed to find.
We went to get coffee. The guy at the counter was arrogant and arch. He refused to get me a last-minute brownie, in the rudest possible way. I think I left a mess, and no tip.
Later I went to the grade school. I had a pocket full of change. I asked a tiny Chinese girl named Grace to help me put quarters on the tables, so people could use them for parking meters or lots, neither of which the town had.
Going down treacherous stairs to the front door, I found a space-age flashlight with no batteries. I went to give it to the guard at the front desk. He turned out to be my first boyfriend, and held my hand somewhat sadly as a colleague exclaimed over the flashlight. He didn't have the same car that I remembered.
